ORIGINS
Aotea Island
Aotea Energy grew from Aotea (Great Barrier Island), where there is no connected electricity grid and energy independence is essential. Living in this environment sparked an interest in solar, batteries and decentralised energy.
The idea began when Aotea’s own solar and battery infrastructure created an opportunity to share unused energy with the surrounding community. This became the foundation for Aotea Energy’s vision: a peer-to-peer energy network where homes and businesses can generate, store and share renewable energy locally.
Rooted in community, sustainability and self-sufficiency, Aotea is developing this technology on the island with the ambition of creating a model that can scale across Aotearoa.
